Laboratory Testing

We use comprehensive lab testing to determine the underlying cause of your health condition!

Thyroid function tests

Thyroid testing may be required if a patient is thought to have a hypothyroid (underactive thyroid), or hyperthyroid (overactive thyroid) or to monitor the effectiveness of hormone replacement therapy. Common markers run are TSH, Serum T4/T3, Free T4/T3, Reverse T3, TBG, Thyroid Antibodies and Iodine. Most physicians only run TSH!

Complete Metabolic Panel

Blood chemistry testing is done to evaluate physiological and biochemical states, such as disease, mineral levels, and organ function. We recommend all patients be screened with a thorough blood chemistry test annually.

Lipid Profile

This is a collective term used to assess cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density cholesterol, and triglycerides. This profile will be included among other markers to assess overall cardiovascular function. While we realize these markers hold significant weight in the medical arena, other sensitive markers have emerged as more reliable in assessing cardiovascular function and chronic disease states. These include the following:

  • C Reactive Protein
  • Creatine Kinase (isoenzymes)
  • Fibrinogen
  • Homosysteine
  • Vitamin D

Complete Blood Count

A CBC gives important information about the kinds and numbers of cells in the blood especially red blood cells, white blood cells and also platelets. A CBC may support symptoms such as weakness, fatigue, or bruising you may have. A CBC also helps us diagnose conditions such as anemia, infection, and many other disorders.

Food Sensitivity Comprehensive Test to 96 foods (IgA, IgG)

Food sensitivity is described as a physiological response associated with a particular food, or compound found in a range of foods that produces symptoms in one or more organ systems but may not necessarily be classified as a true food allergy. Symptoms that occur within 24 hours of exposure will usually show up in IgE antibody testing. Because fo the quick body response you typically know that you are sensitive to these substances. I also test for IgG and IgA antibody reponse as an adverse body reaction may take 24 hours to 5 days to occur. And may show as fatigue, lack of mental clarity, digestive disturbances etc.

Food Intolerance Panel to proteins-gluten, soy, milk and egg (Saliva-IgA)

Comprehensive Gluten Cross-Reactive Food Sensitivity Testing

Gluten has received the majority of the attention because it is the the most researched. It is extremely important to understand that other foods (even gluten-free foods) can react in the same manner as gluten. Many foods can cross-react like this, however, this test looks at the 24 most common foods that cross-react with gluten. Some common cross-reactive foods are corn, rice, coffee, and chocolate. This test can help patients develop a clear and effective lifestyle plan.

Adrenal Stress Index (ASI)

The adrenal glands are oddly shaped endocrine glands that sit atop the kidneys. They are chiefly responsible for releasing hormones in response to stress through the production of corticosteroids such as cortisol and epinephrine. This 24 hour cortisol output test (saliva) will tell us how your body physiology responds to stress.

Immune System Testing

Many patients I see have trouble regulating there immune system. Either there immune tolerance is to low and is unable to fight off foreign invaders or it's exceedingly high (very common) and it's attacking bodily tissue. Examples are the following:

  • Celiac Disease
  • Diabetes
  • Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)
  • Sjogren's syndrome
  • Hashimotos's thyroiditis
  • Graves' disease
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis

Unfortunately, these conditions are most often treated with steroids in the conventional medicine model while nothing is done to balance or modulate their immune system.

Helicobacter Pylori (H Pylori) testing

This bacterium can inhabit various areas in the stomach causing chronic low-level inflammation of the stomach lining and is strongly connected to the development of duodenal and gastric ulcers. For any chronic stomach pain or discomfort, it is recommend to have this test done immediately. In addition the presence of this bad bacteria means your body is producing antibodies to it which are then available to attac other systems of your body.

Leaky Gut/Intestinal Permeability testing

There is normally a barrier between intestinal cells that compose the digestive tract and your blood. Disruption of this will lead to intestinal hyper permeability (leaky gut) which has been proposed by many researchers to involve a relationship with many diseases such as systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Type 1 Diabetes, Allergies, Asthma, Autism, celiac and many other auto immune related conditions. If we suspect that you may suffer from leaky gut syndrome we will give you a stool test kit for you to do at home.

Male & Female Hormone Panels

Only small amounts of hormone changes are required to alter cell function and metabolism. Since hormones make up the foundation of the endocrine system, it becomes critical that we test for imbalances immediately. Many disease states occur because of a simple change in hormone state. This may be due to a defective gland releasing inadequate or excess amounts of hormones, changes in hormone binding with proteins, defective hormone conversion to the active state i.e. (Thyroid Hormones) or an inability to receive proper amounts of hormones at the receptor end.

Furthermore, hormones are important because they have the following effects on the body:

  • stimulation or inhibition of growth
  • mood swings
  • cell survival vs. death
  • activation or suppression of the immune system
  • regulation of metabolism
  • control of the reproductive cycle
  • hunger cravings
  • sleep/wake cycles

I will give you a home test kit utilizing Saliva (intracelluar - tells me whats going in inside of the cells) rather than only looking at blood which is extra celluar (cells are within the blood).

Neurotransmitters (Brain Chemistry)

Do you experience any of the following?

  • Mood Swings
  • Sleep Disturbances
  • Tiredness
  • Depression
  • Food Cravings
  • Memory Loss
  • Weight Gain
  • Low Libido
  • Anxiety
  • Headaches

If you experience any of the above symptoms, you may have a neurotransmitter concern that could benefit from a comprehensive assessment by our office.

What are neurotransmitters? A neurotranmitter is the key chemical messenger of the nervous system. Neurotransmitters allow nerves to talk to each other. The brain uses neurotransmitters for many functions - from mood and thoughts to telling your heart to beat and muscles to move.

The key to feeling better is through the balance and proper response of both the calming and stimulating neurotransmitters. You might be familiar with medications that change neurotransmitter balance to relieve depression or treat Parkinsons disease.

Fuzzing thinking, loss of short term memory, feeling like your in a fog?, decreased ability to focus, anxiety, depression, increased sensitivity, fatigue, and poor sleep can all be helped with proper neurotransmitter balance.

By using a specially developed questionnaire and and giving you a home urine test kit we can determine if you can be helped by supporting these important and powerful brain chemicals.

Amino acids, other nutritional botanicals, micronutrients and foods are used to support your neurotransmitter balance.

Chronic stress, poor diet, genetics, toxins, blood sugar imbalances, infections, allergies and more can affect neurotransmitter production.

Our goal is to restore balance and help you feel and perform at your highest level. All this is accomplished without the use of strong medications that can have severe side-effects. Natural, gentle help using objective testing is at the heart our unique neurotransmitter program.

Some Important Neurotransmitters and Their Function:

GABA - an amino acid, is a key inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. It helps support relaxation and sleep. A deficiency of this amino acid can cause leave the brain in an overexcited state promoting symptoms such as fear, anxiety and worry.

SEROTONIN - a deficiency in serotonin may result in depression, anger, and loss of interest and enjoyment of life. Relationships can be similarly affected and sleep disorders may result.

DOPAMINE - this neurotransmitter has many functions in the brain, related to motivation, cognition, mood, and attention. It is associated with the pleasure system of the brain and promotes feelings of enjoyment. A deficiency in dopamine can result in physical and mental fatigue, cravings of various types, feelings of hopelessness, anger and worthlessness.

ACETYLCHOLINE - is used by the brain to promote cognition, memory, and arousal. Its deficiency can result in memory loss of various kinds, such as verbal, visual, numbers, faces, and objects.
