What is Massage Therapy?

Massage therapy is the practice of using pressure, tension, motion, or vibration on the body's muscles, tendons, ligaments, and lymphatic areas for medicinal purposes. Massage enhances the body’s ability to heal and reduces pain.

Through increased blood and lymph fluid circulation and the reduction of stress, massage therapy can increase the efficiency of the immune system. It can also reduce blood pressure, relax muscles, improves range of motion and increase endorphins (the body's natural pain killer), enhancing one's medical treatment and recovery.

How does massage work?

Massage works by kneading and stroking muscles to relax them, and uses friction to stimulate soft tissues. This therapy can increase blood and lymph circulation while breaking up scar tissue between muscle fibers.

What does massage feel like?

Therapeutic massage and its effect vary with each individual. Clothing is usually removed from the area treated and the patient should be relaxed and comfortable. The amount of clothing removed is always left up to the patients comfort.  We use a non-oily massage cream to reduce friction during the circular stroking and compression of soft tissue.

Why is massage used?

Massage is useful in many conditions in which body relaxation, the reduction of swelling, and muscle mobilization is desired. Massage can be helpful in overcoming the swelling and pooling of fluids at the site of recent injury or trauma.

What to look for in a massage therapist?

When looking for a massage therapist, choose someone based on their past experience and how they address your needs. Different massage therapists are trained with often varying expertise. We offer excellent massage therapists who are trained in many of the most sought after methods and have plenty of experience.

Types of Massage we offer:

1) Swedish

Traditional massage using efflurage, petrissage, vibration tapotement, and compression.  This is more of a relaxing form of massage but not as therapeutically beneficial.

2) Deep Tissue

Therapeutic massage using deep pressure.  Our Therapists will periodically ask you if the pressure needs to be adjusted.  This form of massage is best for reducing muscle spasm, speeds healing of injured muscle tissue by improving circulation and minimizing scar tissue.

3) Sports

Vigorous massage, including stretching and sport-specific muscle therapy.

4) Trigger Point Therapy

Finding and eliminating pain-causing “knots” in muscles. Great treatment for chronic pain.

5) Pregnancy

Lighter massage performed on our massage table specifically designed to allow the belly of a pregnant woman to be gently cradled while in a face down position.

6) Hot Stone

7) Acupressure/Shiatsu & Reflexology

Derived from acupuncture; pressure is applied to key points of the body’s energy channels, usually combined with other techniques.
